Die For Me Review

Die for Me (Revenants, #1)Die for Me by Amy Plum

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

From Goodreads.

My life had always been blissfully, wonderfully normal. But it only took one moment to change everything.

Suddenly, my sister, Georgia, and I were orphans. We put our lives into storage and moved to Paris to live with my grandparents. And I knew my shattered heart, my shattered life, would never feel normal again. Then I met Vincent.
Mysterious, sexy, and unnervingly charming, Vincent Delacroix appeared out of nowhere and swept me off my feet. Just like that, I was in danger of losing my heart all over again. But I was ready to let it happen.
Of course, nothing is ever that easy. Because Vincent is no normal human. He has a terrifying destiny, one that puts his life at risk every day. He also has enemies . . . immortal, murderous enemies who are determined to destroy him and all of his kind.
While I'm fighting to piece together the remnants of my life, can I risk putting my heart—as well as my life and my family's—in jeopardy for a chance at love?
My Review:

Die for me was a nice and steady read, though a rather dull book. I could say it was enjoyable but not awesome or anything.

After her parents died in a car crash, 16 year old Kate Mercier and her older sister Georgia move into their grandparents’ house in Paris, France. Kate is heartbroken and clinging to every memory of her parents she could remember while her sister goes out to clubs to handle her own grief. After spending some time staying inside her grandparents’ apartment, afraid of going outside and facing the world again Kate’s sister pushes her to go outside and start living again. So as she goes out, sits in a cafĂ© and read a book she finds a devastatingly handsome and charming Vincent – you know black hair, blue eyes, staring at her. Kate feels this connection snap between then and then you know it is next to impossible to go back from there.

As Kate’s and Vincent’s lives start mingling more and more, Kate discovers Vincent’s deadly secret. Vincent is a Revenant; a person who dies repeatedly to save others lives. At that moment Kate realizes two things. First that the wall sorts of thing that she had built around her heart to protect herself was crumbling down because of Vincent and second that no matter what happens, even if she walks away from him, nothing would ever be the same. Though she tries and tries hard. It was quite surprising to see such a hard resolve and determination in the person who was formed as a little weak and soft and…well boring character in my head.

I must say that the idea was quite original and new too. This is certainty the first time I have heard about Revenants. Although they are basically really good looking zombies who instead of going around and eating people, helps them and give up their lives for, again and again. I liked the setting of the book best. What a better place to choose from for a magical fantasy to come to life than the city of lights, Paris – romantic and rich in history. This setting is as perfect as it can get, creating an enchanting and magical atmosphere for this new paranormal story. Its well rounded and enjoyable characters are another thing that I liked about this book. Kate’s character was…good I guess, but I didn’t find her as interesting as I did with all the other characters. I think m favorite character in the whole book was Jules.

The plot, the concept and the character won me over to give the book these ratings. I just wish that the leading character of the book – Kate, could have been written better than she actually is. What’s the fun in reading a book if its other characters are more intriguing than the leading character? At least Vincent was good enough that I don’t have anything to say about him. There was something about the story too that just didn’t work right for me but God knows what that is. You know when you finish a book, there is this feeling that you get which tells exactly what you felt and thought about the book but sometimes there are no correct words to describe what exactly you are feeling? I am in that situation right now. So whoever understands this, please bear with me.

If I wouldn’t have had that feeling in my guts then I would have given this book 4 stars or maybe even 5, because I thing that the book deserves it. Amazing setting, a fresh new plot and well rounded characters (almost) – we don’t always get these three in perfect package. But…

Damn that feeling!
